The same machine rarely has the same price
Across identical specs, dates, and delivery windows, quotes for the same unit class routinely spread by double digits. Distance to the yard, current utilization, and fleet age drive most of the gap — factors invisible to a renter calling one supplier at a time.
Competition compresses rates fastest in dense markets
Markets with five or more active suppliers per category show the tightest spreads and the fastest quote times. Thin markets still benefit: even a second competing quote materially moves the winning rate.
Transport is the hidden line item
Delivery and pickup fees vary more than base rates in most categories. Requests that state exact jobsite access details up front receive fewer surprise transport adjustments at invoice time.
Methodology
Based on anonymized, aggregated quote and order activity across the Downstream marketplace over the trailing twelve months. Rates are compared within matched unit class, rental duration, and market. No individual supplier or customer pricing is disclosed.
